Utica is a small town in Ohio. It is tucked away in a verdant valley along Central Ohio’s Licking River. This small town sits at the intersection of Ohio State Route 13 and Route 62, and is 19 kilometers south to Utica, and 56 kilometers west to Columbus. With an area of around 1.7 square miles, the small town is home to 2,294 people.
Due to its abundance of silica and natural gas, Utica was the largest hand-blown window glass manufacturing city in the U.S. at the start of the 20th century. Glassmakers would blow the glass into a long tube after being collected in a molten ball. They would then remove the ends, heat the tube again, slice, and set it flat to create the window glass. Unfortunately, with the 1929 crisis and new glass inventions, Utica’s glass manufacturers went out of business.
Utica is also home to some interesting sites. South of Utica, at the Ye Olde Mill, sits the central headquarters of the Velvet Ice Cream Company. The mill is a popular local tourist attraction with picnic areas, an ice cream parlor, and a restaurant. Utica hosts the annual ice cream parade and Utica Ice Cream Festival over Memorial Day weekend.
Additionally, the Village of Utica offers a top-notch educational system. Utica Elementary, Middle and High Schools are located in the village and are a part of the North Fork Local School District. Author Patt Morrison and former professional American football offensive lineman Todd Londot have passed through its education system. There is a public library in Utica that is a part of the Licking County Library System.
