Johnstown sits in an area that was once designated to compensate Revolutionary War soldiers for their service. It is a portion of a 4,000-acre parcel of land that President John Adams gave to the revolutionary soldier John Brown in exchange for his military services in 1800. In 1810, he sold his 4,000 acres to Dr. Oliver Bigelow of New York. In 1813, Bigelow donated the streets, town square, and the cemetery that is now known as Bigelow Cemetery to the village.
Johnstown expanded gradually from its establishment in 1880 and became an important center for anti-slavery activity. It eventually started serving as the center of Monroe, Liberty, and Jersey Townships. Many early establishments in the Town at the time catered to agricultural requirements as the area’s economy was focused on agriculture.
Since 1970, the region has continued to experience considerable expansion. Although still a small city, it offers lots of activities. For instance, the Autumn Rush Vineyard offers an ambient place to kick back and have a good time with friends and family. Additionally, The Links at Echo Springs and the Kyber Run Golf Course are among the most popular spots for golfers.
