Galena was originally called Zoar – a post office called Galena has been in operation since 1834. Nature abounds in Galena with a great variety of trees, flowers and animals. In fact, during their nesting season, Galena boasts the largest population of prothonotary warblers in Ohio. In season one can see various shorebirds – including ospreys and bald eagles.
In May of 2019, the Galena became the first municipality in the region to become a Bee City USA affiliate. Bee City USA brings people together to make their communities better places for pollinators. Galena is a great stopping place for trekkers following the Ohio to Erie Trail. Downtown Galena, with its public square and restaurants, is just a quarter mile from the trail. Kane’s Crossing trail offers scenic views from the bridge over Big Walnut Creek.
For those who love to fish, Galena has Big and Little Walnut Creeks and the Hoover Reservoir. For those who prefer to just relax and unwind, we have Ruffner Park and Miller Park, and the Hoover Mudflats Boardwalk is a lovely place for stroll.
